How to get people at UQ moving more and sitting less

Posted at: 05:32pm 03/03/10

I think it is a pretty common experience for everyone to be really busy at work. From when we start to when we finish we focus on so many things to do that we easily forget ourselves in that process!

For many of us the problem is that our job is nothing but sitting all day at a desk and this is no good for our health.

If you identify yourself in this description and want to do something for your health, what about starting with sharing ideas and creative ways to get ourself more active at UQ?

The discussion is open!

I've set my computer to give me a little buzz reminder every hour which prompts me to simply stand up, stretch and take a few minutes to walk around (and drink a glass of water!). it was such a simple thing that seems to have worked for me. Before I did this, the hours would easily pass me by without me moving from my desk at all! I've really noticed it has reduced my back and shoulder pain which comes every time I have long days in front of the computer.

People complain about the parking situation, but it could work for us. Leave the fees in place for the spaces around campus, and keep it limited. The council, however, could remove the two hour zone from the streets around the uni. That way people can park here during their classes and/or work hours, and walk that little bit further. We could all save some $$ on parking as well!
